Successful Trials of MPATGM Weapon System by DRDO for Indian Army

In a significant milestone for India's defense capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with the Indian Army has accomplished successful trials of the Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) Weapon System at the Pokhran Field Firing Range (PFFR) in Rajasthan.

The MPATGM Weapon System, entirely indigenous in design and development by DRDO, comprises the MPATGM, the Man Portable Launcher, the Target Acquisition System (TAS), and the Fire Control Unit (FCU).

During the trials, the MPATGM showcased outstanding performance in missile functionality, warhead efficiency, and the utilization of the Tandem Warhead System. Its capabilities were notably demonstrated in defeating modern armour-protected Main Battle Tanks, marking a significant advancement in India's anti-tank warfare capabilities.

Of particular note is the successful completion of penetration trials and the incorporation of a dual-mode seeker functionality, augmenting the missile's precision and adaptability in diverse battlefield scenarios.

The trials' success underscores the readiness of the MPATGM Weapon System for final user evaluation trials, paving the way for its induction into the Indian Army. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended DRDO and the Indian Army for their collaborative efforts, emphasizing the achievement's significance in realizing the vision of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.

About the MPATGM Weapon System:

The MPATGM (Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile) Weapon System stands as a portable yet potent arsenal, empowering infantry units with the capability to engage and neutralize enemy tanks and armoured vehicles. Its lightweight and single-person transportability make it an invaluable asset for mobile infantry units.

At its core, the MPATGM system is armed with a precision-guided missile, ensuring accurate targeting and destruction of armoured threats from a safe distance. This system equips infantry units with a formidable anti-tank capability, enhancing their effectiveness on the battlefield.

About DRDO:

Established in 1958, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) serves as the principal research and development agency for India's Ministry of Defence. Dedicated to enhancing military capabilities and technological prowess, DRDO spearheads the development of cutting-edge weapon systems, missiles, electronic warfare systems, and communication technologies for the Indian armed forces.

Through collaboration with domestic and international partners, DRDO remains at the forefront of bolstering national security and fortifying India's defence capabilities.

Understanding Tandem Warheads:

A tandem warhead represents a sophisticated explosive mechanism engineered to neutralize armoured vehicles by employing two sequential explosive charges. The initial charge is tasked with penetrating the vehicle's armour, while the subsequent charge inflicts internal damage, maximizing the warhead's armour-piercing capabilities. Commonly deployed in anti-tank missiles and rocket-propelled grenades, tandem warheads significantly enhance the likelihood of mission success against heavily armoured targets.
