Himachal Pradesh Lokayukta Act was passed by the State Government of Himachal Pradesh in 1983. Consquently, the Court of Lokayukta was established on 17th August 1983.

The main objective of the act to enquire and investigate the allegations of corruption against high dignitaries such as Chief Minister, Member of Legislative Assembly and other high helding offices in government institutions.

Only a Judge of Supreme Court or the Chief Justice of High Court can be appointed as Lokayukta of the State. He or she is appointed on the recommendation of a selection committe comprising of Cheif Minister (Chairman), Speaker of Legislative Assembly, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly and Chief Justice of High Court by the Governor of the State.
