An estuary is a transitional water body between a river and an ocean. Their environment is subject to both marine and to riverine influences. They are rich in nutrient due to mixing of sea and fresh water. Thus they are one of the most productive natural habitats in the world.

An estuary can be defined as partially enclosed coastal brackish water body with one or more rivers flowing into and with with an open connection to the ocean.

Most of the estuaries formed during Holocene, about 10000 years ago. Kerala is one such place where one can spot these estuaries.
