Indo-Pacific Dynamics: India's BrahMos Missile Delivery to Philippines

India is set to deliver the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines, a significant development stemming from a USD 375 million deal signed in 2022. This marks India's inaugural major defence export, underscoring its emergence as a key supplier of advanced weapon systems.

Strategic Significance:

The delivery of BrahMos missiles comes amidst escalating tensions between Manila and Beijing in the South China Sea. The Philippines intends to deploy the missiles along its coastal areas to enhance its defence capabilities and deter potential threats. This move reflects the deepening strategic ties between India and the Philippines, both concerned about China's growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.

About the BrahMos Missile System:

The BrahMos, jointly developed by India's DRDO and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, is globally renowned for its precision and targeting prowess. Capable of being launched from land, sea, and air platforms, it boasts a range of up to 290 km. With a speed of Mach 2.8, it is challenging to intercept and can carry conventional warheads of up to 300 kg.

India's Defence Exports Expansion:

The BrahMos deal signifies a milestone in India's endeavour to bolster its defence exports. Recent years have seen India actively promoting its defence manufacturing capabilities to become a significant player in the global arms market. In FY 2022-23, India's defence exports hit a record high of USD 2.63 billion, marking a 32.5% increase from the previous year. India aims to achieve defence exports worth USD 5 billion by 2025.

Future Prospects:

Beyond the Philippines, other Southeast Asian nations like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia have shown interest in acquiring the BrahMos system. India is also exploring opportunities to export other indigenous weapon systems, such as the Akash surface-to-air missile and the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher.
