| Advancements in Security Infrastructure for Indian Air Force Bases |
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is undertaking significant measures to bolster security at an additional 30 air bases nationwide. This initiative involves the implementation of an advanced multi-layered, hi-tech surveillance, and intrusion detection system, building upon the existing Integrated Perimeter Security System (IPSS) already operational at 23 key air bases.
The decision to reinforce perimeter security at these additional air bases stems from the persistent threat of terrorist attacks targeting military installations. Historical events, such as the 2016 attack on the Pathankot Air Base by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists, highlighted vulnerabilities in existing security protocols, prompting the need for enhanced security infrastructure.
Key Features of the New Security System:
The upgraded IPSS will incorporate several innovative technologies to optimize intrusion detection and monitoring:
- Electrical Smart Power Fence: This feature ensures a physically secure boundary and alerts security personnel to any breach attempts.
- CCTV Cameras with Infrared Illuminators: Equipped with night vision capabilities, these cameras monitor and record activities round the clock.
- Radars: Continuous surveillance and movement detection over a wide area enhance security monitoring capabilities.
- Underground Vibration Detection Systems (UVDS): Linked via dedicated optical fibre cables, UVDS detects even minute vibrations near the perimeter.
- Dual PTZ Thermal and Visible Cameras: These cameras provide detailed surveillance footage and can zoom and rotate to follow detected movements.
Additional Innovations and Upgrades:
The new systems will include mini UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for aerial surveillance, addressing potential surveillance gaps and providing real-time perimeter monitoring. AI and automation will play pivotal roles, offering a comprehensive surveillance picture to facilitate timely decision-making in response to potential threats.
Procedural Developments:
To proceed with these enhancements, an RFI (Request for Information) has been issued to Indian companies, inviting proposals and ideas for system incorporation. The deadline for responses is set for June 24, reflecting a strategic and expedited approach to implementing critical security measures.
These advancements signify a concerted effort by the Indian Air Force to address security challenges effectively and safeguard military installations against emerging threats.
