India has embarked on a journey towards developing its own indigenous bullet train, set to outpace speeds of 250 kilometres per hour (kmph), marking a significant leap in the nation's rail infrastructure.
Introduction to High-Speed Rail in India
In the global spectrum, high-speed trains are categorized as those capable of exceeding 250 kmph, akin to renowned models like the French TGV and the Japanese Shinkansen. India's endeavor involves deploying the Shinkansen E5 series bullet trains, anticipated to operate on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, achieving speeds up to 320 kmph.
Vande Bharat Express: A Pioneering Endeavor
The Vande Bharat Express, colloquially known as Train 18, stands as a groundbreaking indigenous electric multiple unit (EMU) train, engineered by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. While its maximum operational speed reaches 160 kmph, test runs have demonstrated capabilities of reaching 180 kmph.
Key Features of Vande Bharat Express
Since its inaugural journey on 15th February 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Vande Bharat Express has expanded its reach, connecting cities like New Delhi, Varanasi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Passengers are welcomed with modern amenities, including air-conditioned coaches, Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS-based passenger information, automatic doors, and bio-vacuum toilets.
Technological Marvel: Manufacturing and Design
Integral to the Vande Bharat project is its manufacturing process at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Crafted from stainless steel, the coaches boast of enhanced energy efficiency and aerodynamic design, facilitating swift acceleration and braking systems. The train's safety features, including the driver-guard communication system, ensure a secure and efficient journey.
