Maritime Security Insights- Highlights from 2024 Naval Commanders Conference

The first edition of the Naval Commanders’ Conference of 2024 set sail on March 5, 2024, showcasing the formidable maritime capabilities of the Indian Navy. Under the watchful eye of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, the conference commenced with a compelling display of India's sea power, exemplified by the seamless coordination of ‘twin-carrier operations’ featuring INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya. This demonstration underscored India's commitment to maintaining maritime superiority in the region.

In his address during the inaugural session, Shri Rajnath Singh lauded the Indian Navy for its expanding multi-dimensional capabilities, particularly in the Indian Ocean region. He praised the Navy's endeavors towards fostering peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, aligning with the vision of Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).

This year's Naval Commanders’ Conference adopted a hybrid format, facilitating deliberations on strategic, operational, and administrative aspects of maritime security. Against the backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics and regional challenges, discussions focused on critical issues such as China’s increasing presence in the Indian Ocean and the threat posed by Houthi militants in the Red Sea.

A significant aspect of the conference was the collaboration between the Navy and other branches of the armed forces. The Chief of Defence Staff, along with the Chiefs of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force, engaged with Naval Commanders to explore avenues for enhancing tri-service synergy and readiness, emphasizing a unified approach to national security.

The Indian Navy's anti-piracy operations in the Indo-Pacific region garnered widespread appreciation, bolstering maritime security and upholding India's sovereignty. Beyond its regional commitments, the Navy's proactive role in global maritime security reflects India's growing influence on the global stage.
