On March 8, 2024, a historic moment unfolded at Air Force Station Hindan, Uttar Pradesh, as President Droupadi Murmu, Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, bestowed the prestigious President’s Standard upon 45 Squadron and 221 Squadron, alongside presenting the President’s Colours to 11 Base Repair Depot (BRD) and 509 Signal Unit (SU) of the Indian Air Force (IAF). This singular event marked a milestone in IAF history, as four units were honored simultaneously, reflecting their exceptional contributions to the nation.

The President’s Standard and Colours represent the highest honor accorded to military units, recognizing their exemplary service during times of war and peace. Awarded after 18 and 25 years of distinguished service respectively, these accolades underscore the commitment and valor exhibited by the honored units.

Among the distinguished units recognized during the ceremony were:

  • No. 45 ‘Flying Daggers’: The pioneering Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) squadron of the IAF.
  • No. 221 Squadron ‘Valiants’: Renowned for its significant role in the 1999 Kargil conflict, accounting for nearly one-third of all offensive missions.
  • 11 Base Repair Depot (BRD)
  • 509 Signal Unit (SU)

The President’s Standard was received by Group Captain M Surendran (45 Squadron) and Group Captain Shubhankan (221 Squadron), while Air Commodore Ashutosh Vaidya (11 BRD) and Group Captain Vivek Sharma (509 SU) accepted the President’s Colours on behalf of their respective units.

In her address, President Murmu lauded the Indian Air Force for its steadfast commitment to safeguarding the nation. She hailed the courage, dedication, and selflessness demonstrated by Air Warriors throughout the nation's history, notably in the wars of 1948, 1965, 1971, and 1999. Additionally, she commended their unwavering support in relief and rescue missions during domestic and international disasters. The President emphasized that the valor and determination exhibited by these brave airmen serve as a beacon of inspiration for all citizens, reflecting the spirit of service ingrained within the IAF.

This ceremony not only celebrated the valor of the honored units but also highlighted the unwavering dedication of the Indian Air Force to protect and serve the nation.
