| Preserving India Linguistic Diversity- The IGNCA Language Atlas Initiative |
The Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), functioning as an autonomous entity under the Union Culture Ministry, has put forth a pioneering initiative: the creation of a 'Language Atlas' of India through a comprehensive linguistic survey. This endeavor seeks to systematically document and catalogue the vast array of languages spoken across the nation, alongside their associated regional dialects. By doing so, it aims to fill a significant gap in contemporary linguistic mapping, a need that has become increasingly apparent in the wake of the monumental Linguistic Survey of India conducted before independence.
The urgency of this project stems from the recognition that while the Census provides a broad overview of linguistic diversity, a dedicated survey at the district level is essential to capture the nuances of India's rich linguistic tapestry. With 22 scheduled languages written in 13 different scripts, in addition to numerous unlisted dialects facing extinction, the need for updated mapping has never been more pressing.
The objectives of the IGNCA's proposed survey are clear: to enumerate the languages spoken in various states and regions, and to create detailed linguistic maps highlighting patterns of language usage, overlaps, and discontinuities. By undertaking field studies in over 780 districts, the initiative aims to inform policy perspectives and facilitate more effective governance-to-citizen communication.
