The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) or also known as the Pusa Institute is the first agriculture research institute in India. It was established in 1905 at Pusa, Bihar with the financial assistance of an American Philanthropist, Henry Phipps, Jr as Agricultural Research Institute and College. It was renamed as Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research in 1911 and Imperial Agricultural Research Institute in 1919. After the devasting 1934 earthquake in Bihar, the institute was relocated in New Delhi.

After Independence of India, the Institute was renamed as the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. The institute played an important role in Green revolution of India and making India a self sufficient nation. In 1958, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute became first Deemed Agricultural University of India under UGC act of 1956.

Later, GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology on 17 November 1960, which was then known as Uttar Pradesh Agricultural University, became first state agricultural university in India. The university campus is spread over 10,016.29 acre (40.5345 sq km) land, which makes it second largest university in terms of landmass. The university also played an important role in Green Revolution in India. It launched one of the largest seed production programs at that time, under the name Pantnagar Seeds. The university's contribution was recognized by Norman Borlaug, who described the university as "the Harbinger of Green Revolution".

On 26 January 1993, Central Agricultural University, Manipur became first central agricultural university in India. The institute was established in order to promote agricultural education and research in seven states of Northeast India as these states were unable to establish any state agricultural university due to land and monetary constraints. Later, Rani Laxmi Bai Central Agricultural University, Jhansi became the second central agricultural university in 2014 and served to the Bundelkhand region shared between Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. In 2016, Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, which was established in recognition of first President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad legacy and on the original land of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (or the Pusa Institute) in 1970, upgraded to central agricultural university, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University.
