Puducherry is one of the seven union territories of India. It has four districts, viz. Puducherry, Mahé, Yanam and Karaikal.

Puducherry (district) is the largest district in terms of both area and population, whereas Mahé is the smallest district in terms of both area and population.

All four districts retained their original borders of the French India. They were organised as a union territory of Puducherry after the transfer of French India territories to Union of India in 1954.
