CSpace: Kerala's Landmark Entry into OTT Terrain

On March 7, 2024, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated India's pioneering state-run over-the-top (OTT) platform named 'CSpace' in Thiruvananthapuram. This innovative venture, managed by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC), aims to spotlight exceptional films, documentaries, and artistic creations that haven't received broad theatrical releases but hold significant cultural and artistic value.

Curatorial Process and Selection:

To uphold the caliber of content on CSpace, the KSFDC has assembled a distinguished panel of 60 experts as curators. Each submission undergoes evaluation by a panel of three members, including notable figures such as Benyamin, OV Usha, Santhosh Sivan, Shyamaprasad, Sunny Joseph, and Jeo Baby. Their discernment ensures that only content of artistic merit is featured.

Initial Content Offerings:

CSpace's inaugural lineup comprises 42 carefully curated pieces, encompassing 35 feature films, six documentaries, and one short film. The platform is accessible for download on both Android and iOS devices.

Revenue Model and Sharing:

Operating on a pay-per-view model, CSpace requires users to pay Rs. 75 to access feature films, with reduced fees for short films. Half of the revenue generated is earmarked for content creators, while KSFDC shoulders around 50% of operational costs, covering technical aspects, rental expenses, quality enhancements, and website upkeep.

Objectives and Impact:

CSpace, championed by KSFDC chairman and acclaimed filmmaker Shaji N Karun, represents a significant cultural endeavor aimed at refining audience tastes and behaviors. By showcasing Malayalam cinema to a global audience, CSpace seeks to elevate lesser-known yet deserving films, addressing prevailing challenges in the OTT landscape such as content curation and distribution.

This initiative is poised to bridge gaps in the film industry, offering a platform for content-driven narratives and fostering appreciation beyond linguistic boundaries. Moreover, CSpace's launch responds to industry concerns regarding diminishing profits for exhibitors and distributors, offering an alternative avenue for film releases beyond commercial OTT platforms.

By amalgamating informative and entertaining content, CSpace aims to carve a niche for itself, catering to diverse viewer preferences while championing the rich cinematic heritage of Kerala.
