A ship canal is an artifical waterway created to service major water transport vehicles. These canals are usually used for transporting goods over large distances as transport through waterways is the cheapest way among all other forms of transport.

The earliest example of canal is Grand Canal of China. It is considered as the oldest and still working canal system in the modern world. Its development started around 5th Cenutry BCE.
