Agroclimatic Zones of Punjab

Punjab is the leading producer of rice, wheat, and maize in India. Thus, known as the food bowl of India. It is also one of the largest producers of fruits and vegetables in India. The whole agriculture sector contributes 21 per cent to the GSPD of Punjab. On the basis of soil, altitude, rainfall and temperature, the five agroclimatic zones in Punjab have been identified, which are

1. Sub-mountain Undulating Zone
Climate: Subhumid
Region Covered: Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Pathankot
Major Kharif Crop: Maize, Sugarcane
Major Rabi Crop: Wheat
Fruit Crops: Mango, Litchi, Citrus, and Guava
Average Rainfall: 1000 mm
Cropping Intensity: 177%

2. Undulating Plains
Climate: Dry Subhumid
Region Covered: Rupnagar (Ropar), SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr), Mohali
Major Kharif Crop: Paddy, Maize Sugarcane
Major Rabi Crop: Wheat, Oilseeds
Fruit Crops: Mango, Litchi, and Guava
Average Rainfall: 1000 mm
Cropping Intensity: 187%

3. Central Plains
Climate: Semiarid
Region Covered: Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala
Major Kharif Crop: Paddy, Maize, Groundnut, Cotton
Major Rabi Crop: Wheat, Barley, Gram
Fruit Crops: Pear, Guava, and Grapes
Average Rainfall: 700 mm
Cropping Intensity: 189%

4. Western Plains
Climate: Arid
Region Covered: Fazilka, Ferozepur and Faridkot
Major Kharif Crop: Paddy, Cotton
Major Rabi Crop: Wheat, Oilseeds, Gram, Barley
Average Rainfall: 700 mm
Cropping Intensity: 190%

5. Western Zone
Climate: Arid
Region Covered: Barnala, Bathinda, Mansa, Moga, Muktsar, and Sangrur
Major Kharif Crop: Cotton, Paddy
Major Rabi Crop: Wheat, Gram, Oilseeds
Fruit Crops: Malta
Average Rainfall: 700 mm
Cropping Intensity: 193%
